IBM Readies z/OS Version 1.7 for September 30 Launch
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

When IBM launched the new System z9 mainframes three weeks ago, it also debuted three new releases of its core mainframe operating systems for the 21st Century: the flagship z/OS platform, formerly known as OS/390 and then MVS/ESA, MVS/XA, and MVS before that; the z/VM platform, formerly known as VM/ESA, VM/XA, and VM before that; and z/OS.e, which is a stripped-down and less-expensive version of the z/OS platform that is only available on the zSeries 800 and 890 mainframes. This week, Big Iron will review the announcements that IBM made with z/OS Version 1.7, which is coming out September 30. READ MORE >

(Enterprise Systems) Sub-capacity pricing continues to gain popularity as witnessed by last week's announcement by Computer Associates that it would support capacity-based pricing on low-MIPS emulated z/Architecture and System/390 environments. CA began its sub-capacity pricing program almost a year ago. IBM, BMC, and other companies are also promoting this method of pricing software. READ MORE >
(z/Journal) The storage story of the past half dozen years or so is all about decreasing prices and increasing capacities. Those things you can count on, but what about performance? Can it keep up with capacity? And what about the realistic limits on that capacity? READ MORE >
(ComputerWeekly) IBM expects to do well with its new z9 mainframes, but Isham Research analyst Phil Payne has discovered some workload-related issues relating to IBM's Large Scale Performance Reference (LSPR) that should be taken into consideration as you make plans for unleashing this beast in your own particular environment.
