Mainframe Sales Slip in Q3 as Customers Await System z9s

In 2004, rising zSeries mainframe sales helped buoy IBM's overall sales of hardware and software, but in the first half of 2005 sales slipped, and as the company divulged yesterday when it reported its financial results for the third quarter, mainframe sales have continued to drop. IBM has been vague about how much of the decline can be attributed to the System z9 announcements in the summer and how much might be the result of overcapacity or the use of alternative platforms at mainframe shops.
