NEC and Unisys Forge Deep Server and Services Alliance

When Unisys announced two weeks ago that it would be laying off some 3,600 employees--about 10 percent of its workforce--as part of a major restructuring, it hinted that it would be moving some work offshore. Last week, we found out where some of that work was going: to Japanese server maker and former rival NEC, which has just signed a broad and deep technology alliance with Unisys to, among other things, create and manufacture a future line of servers based on Intel processors. (SearchStorage) Realizing the demand to secure tape and data and the disadvantages of its software-based encryption products, IBM is on the road to hardware-based encryption for mainframes. However, that takes time to develop, so in the meantime it is offering an update to z/OS that uses an encryption processor included with zSeries servers. READ MORE >

(IBM iSource) IBM will curtail the transferability of z/VM 5.2 licenses beginning on December 16. Basically, you are going to have to get your paperwork in order if you want to transfer a z/VM license when you sell a zSeries mainframe on which it is running.
