Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web
(IT Jungle) There is a growing dissatisfaction in the iSeries reseller channel and an increasing wariness over what IBM may do about it. As iSeries volumes have declined over the past few years, and all servers inch closer to commodity status, buyers enjoy more CPWs for less money than ever before. But these economics are also forcing profits down for smaller resellers and driving them to take more daring chances. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) IBM has announced an upgrade deal for smaller iSeries shops with first-generation iSeries Model 820 and 830 machines. This deal cuts the cost of customers moving to newer, second-generation Model 810 or 825 servers, provided they move by June 2004. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) It's been four years since IBM caught the Linux bug. This week, Irving Wladawsky, IBM vice president of technology and strategy, reminisced about how the growth rates for Linux shipments and revenues--not to mention IBM's 6,300 enterprise Linux customers, including 200 governments--justified IBM's strategy. Now IBM appears to want Linux to drive sales of its Power-based machines, and it wants Power machines to drive Linux. READ MORE >
(CRN) Open-source activists gathered at LinuxWorld last week to protest anti-Linux campaigns they believe are being spearheaded on Capital Hill by The SCO Group and Microsoft. READ MORE >
(iSeries 400 Experts) Last week, IBM announced Q4 and 2003 earnings, which included news of the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year iSeries revenue growth. Although this is the first time in over five years that the iSeries platform hit that mark, IBM chose not to emphasize the iSeries' 2 percent fourth quarter revenue growth and 7 percent revenue increase for the year. READ MORE >
(iSeries Network) IBM has announced the end-of-service date for OS/390 2.10 (the last release of OS/390) will be September 30, 2004. But Big Blue isn't recommending iSeries as a migration option; rather, the company is encouraging customers to migrate to z/OS 1.4 by that date. However, Avnet, one of the world's largest technology distribution and services companies, is marketing iSeries migration to the OS/390 customers. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) A group of software tools and middleware makers recently joined Sun Microsystems in establishing the Java Tools Community. Not unexpectedly, there's been a lot of noise about whether the group has any real purpose or teeth, and whether it poses a threat to the IBM-backed Eclipse consortium or the Sun-backed NetBeans project, both of which are trying to deliver open-source integrated development environments for Java. READ MORE >
(iSeries Network) According to one reseller and an IBM senior technical staff member at Big Blue's Linux Technical Center, iSeries Linux customers aren't exactly quaking in their boots about the threat of legal action from The SCO Group over the use of Linux. But two people don't seem to be a representative sample of the entire iSeries community, and it appears that SCO is ready to make another move against the Linux community, targeting search engine giant Google over its use of 10,000 Linux servers to run its business. READ MORE >
(Computerworld) PeopleSoft has refuted Oracle's announcement last week that it may nominate five people to PeopleSoft's board of directors and call for an expansion of the board to five members. PeopleSoft said the proposed directors would have "irreconcilable conflicts" if elected to the board. READ MORE >
(CNET News.com) Meanwhile, Oracle has promised that developing new business applications will remain a top priority for the company, even if the company's proposed PeopleSoft acquisition falls through. Charles Phillips, Oracle co-president, says, "Our application business was never contingent on getting PeopleSoft." READ MORE >

(ZDNet) A federal district court judge invalidated 14 barcode-related patents--some of which date back to the 1950s--owned by Lemelson Medical, Education & Research Foundation. The judge said the patents were unenforceable and the plaintiffs in the case, including Symbol Technologies, Zebra Technologies, Intermec Technologies, and Teklogix, didn't infringe on the patents. READ MORE >
(InformationWeek) IBM cut 300 jobs from its computer systems division this week, or about 2 percent of the unit's overall work force. The cuts affect the division's development and finance group and will mostly take place in San Jose, California. READ MORE >
(MC Press Online) A new report titled "A Security Analysis of the Secure Electronic Registration and Voting Experiment (SERVE)" has called for the halt of the deployment of SERVE in 2004 until underlying security issues have been resolved. The report bases these recommendations on apprehensions about the security threats, the on-demand technology of Internet voting, and the stakes for democracy. READ MORE >
