Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(IT Jungle) A cursory look at the server market shows a torrent of X86 machines being sold compared to a trickle of iSeries boxes. But before jumping on any bandwagons or to any conclusions, take a look at where the money is being made. Then take into account that about half of IBM's customers are using an iSeries. When scanning the IT ecosystems, people often find it difficult to see the forest for the trees. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) Not even one out of 10. That's how many corporations are "well prepared" to deal with regulatory compliance issues according to a Yankee Group survey. Going from zero to prepared obviously has plenty of companies spinning their wheels. To some degree the compliance process can be automated, and there is no shortage of software companies with products that aim to do just that. READ MORE >
(eServer Magazine) Application development at iSeries shops has always been based on a variety of development platforms. We're all familiar with the traditional choices: RPG, COBOL and C. Although there are many options to consider, this article considers an iSeries future based on the impacts of IBM's favorite choices: Java and open-source solutions. READ MORE >
(MCPress) How does IBM convince the small- and medium-size businesses of the world that service-oriented architecture is not just the rich folk's yacht, but the working folk's fishing boat as well? Free software, free online training, hotlines, and an array of partnership marketing opportunities are a few of IBM's quick responses to that question. But in the long term, what Big Blue really needs is an ecosystem of application and tool vendors loyal to IBM middleware and with products that have established appeal among SMB customers. (IT Jungle) In his dreams Sun Microsystems President and COO Jonathan Schwartz is planning to buy IBM's server business. Right. I suppose Schwartz also dreams of joining the Bob Dylan/Willie Nelson tour and winning a Grammy. After that, maybe the Tour de France. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) There's a new vice president of worldwide iSeries sales and his name is Bill Donohue, who put together a string of 12 consecutive quarters of growth as head of Unix sales in the Americas prior to his call to iSeries arms. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) i5/OS never crashes (OK seldom crashes), but just because it's painted on your car doesn't crash-proof it. No one knows this better than Allen Hartley, owner of iSeries software vendor ProData Computer Services. He and his son, Joe, race a 335-mph dragster with the i5/OS logo painted on it. On the ProData Web site, you can view a video clip of the i5/OS dragster, and, you'll be able to tell your iSeries cohorts that you watched i5/OS crash. That's something very few people can say. Vendor Announcements, Promotions, and Deals

(IT Jungle) I would classify this news as "well done beats the heck out of well said." Rather than standing pat and touting its current packaging of hardware and software, IBM has once again advanced the iSeries in the most important of all categories, which is price/performance. The i5 models 520 and 570 catch a few breaks, and the Software Maintenance service looks better from the buyers' side of the table. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) Hello? Are you possibly one of the 9.3 million people in the United States who were victims of identity theft last year? Even if you weren't, the odds are getting better that you could be soon, as the fastest growing crime in the country has major impacts on both individuals and businesses. IT departments are the main line of defense when it comes to controlling data and applications access. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) Where the business environment and the IT environment meet, you are likely to find business process management taking root. Although this is a highly computerized integration, it is not without a high degree of human interaction. The inclusion of human decision-making in the business process workflow is now being realized as an important cog in the machine. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) You have RPG skills, but you want to deploy Web applications. The project you are faced with is to integrate existing productivity and development apps with OS/400 spool files, Crystal Reports, DB2/400, and generate reports with a first-class graphical interface. What you need is a plan. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) A St. Louis-based provider of managed hosting services has signed up two notable accounts and will be handling the remote monitoring and management duties for such tasks as batch job processing, upgrades, job scheduling, and backups. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) It's not Robo Cop, but it could be. After all, this security device monitors network traffic against attack vectors, validates protocols, detects port scanning, and provides network event correlation and alert handling in remote offices and branch offices, which are referred to as ROBOs. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) Outside of the OS/400 world, there are issues involving the management of any organization's computers, operating systems, and common applications. If that is your responsibility, here is a product that can map computer dependencies, and analyze risk within the IT infrastructure. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) When a company has 135 stores operating in 20 states, managing inventory is critical to success. Seasonal profiling, exception management, and promotion management are each important aspects that affect profitability and efficiency. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) Everybody in the pool! Connecting OS/400, mainframe, and Unix servers with network-attached printers increases the potential pool of printers and eliminates the requirement to use specialized servers. What? You didn't know this was possible? C'mon in. The water's fine. READ MORE >
(IT Jungle) Forty new features have been added to the OS/400-based supply chain, accounting, and HR package that was recently introduced by Arrow Electronics, a company that is better known as an iSeries reseller than a software vendor. READ MORE >
