Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web
(IT Jungle) The headliners of IBM's summer announcements were covered a week ago, but to complete the coverage -- no missing nits or nats -- you need to know details such as the boost in disk capacity; the increased number of available I/O towers and drawers; changes in the IxA Card that connects the iSeries to the largest IBM X86/X64 server and to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4; an improved system for ordering software upgrades, a new Java 2 Platform Standard Edition, and a new WorkPlace Services Express. (IT Jungle) IBM's iSeries chief architect, Mike Smith, is one of the best people to explain the service oriented architecture framework for developing applications. The fact is most people are in the dark when it comes to SOA. Smith says SOA will be important to accessing business logic and business data stored in i5/OS for shops writing new code. From the Monday morning quarterback's chair, it would seem some vendors purposely plan a high degree of difficulty into its pricing structures believing that is what it takes to extract the greatest profit margin. So if you haven't heard, IBM released its first quarter financials and iSeries revenue rolled up a 10 percent increase over the first quarter of 2004. iSeries general manager Mark Shearer and marketing vice president Peter Bingaman deserve credit for bringing some momentum to the iSeries, but there will be little time to bask in the sunshine.
