Top IBM i Stories from Around the Web

(IT Jungle) High maintenance fees and minimal product enhancements have encouraged software replacement strategies to become more widespread than they were just a few years ago. In the IBM i community, where application and database modernization is at the top of the priority list, migration obstacles--risk and complexity--are being overcome. READ MORE >

(IT Jungle) IBM created FieldProc to automate the implementation of field-level encryption in DB2 for i. It works well when RPG apps use the SQL Query Engine. But legacy RPG operations process data differently, which invites havoc when a legacy application simultaneously works with multiple records. The fix? Replace record-level RPG access calls with SQE calls using RPG Open Access. READ MORE >

(IT Jungle) Largely for economic reasons relating to IBM's high costs in chip manufacturing and relatively low chip volumes, the Power Systems platform left the familiar cadence of Moore's Law progress quite a while ago. IBM stretched it out to three years or more between processor cycles, and here we are in the middle of 2016 and we are still probably at least a year away from the Power9 launch. READ MORE >

(Clabby Analytics) During the past several years, the major server makers focused on redesigning their server architectures to eliminate data flow bottlenecks. Likewise, the database software engineers cranked up the speed of database processing. This combination created fast, efficient, and affordable processing for large databases. In the second half of 2017, IBM will introduce its POWER9 processors, a family of chips built for analytics and cognitive, for new opportunities in cloud and hyperscale, and for technical computing. (Information Week) We all read about all the requests for real-time analytics. They pile up like firewood in Buffalo. What you seldom read about is that not everyone who asks for it actually needs it--or even knows what it means. Is the high cost of moving to real-time analytics justified? Although the prices of memory, storage, and bandwidth all continue to fall, there are technology integration issues, process issues, and cultural issues to be considered. READ MORE >

(Strategic CIO) The IT skills shortage has reached its highest level since the Great Recession of 2008-09, according to the 2016 Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey. After reading about the challenges that exist according to this survey, contact IT Jungle with your own perspective. READ MORE >

(ProData) The need for cross-platform access from and to the IBM i is an integral part of the strategy to increase productivity and implement real time processing in a distributed database environment. This report explains how data integration increases productivity. READ MORE >

(Profound Logic) Smart modernization strategy combines hardware, software, and technical talent. In this on-demand webinar, the focus is on optimizing existing IT assets while staying within a reasonable budget and avoiding a business disruption. Topics of discussion include: application UI, RPG, and database modernization, DevOps, strategies for hiring and retaining development talent, and modern RPG development. The speaker list includes IBM i Business Architect Tim Rowe, plus Brian May, Charles Guarino, Alex Roytman, Jeff Tickner, and Floyd Del Muro. READ MORE >

(Townsend Security) While the IBM DB2 Field Procedures (FieldProc) facility works with native SQL applications, IBM i customers with legacy RPG applications have not taken full advantage of FieldProc to encrypt data in DB2 tables. In particular, the encryption of database columns, which are indexes has been very difficult for IBM i customers using legacy RPG. This podcast reveals how IBM i customers with legacy RPG applications can deploy automatic DB2 encryption over sensitive data which are indexes. It also explains how to leverage OAR capabilities to replace the legacy RPG file I/O with modern SQL operations. READ MORE >
