Linoma Cuts Encrypted Backup Time by 50 Percent

iSeries shops will save time when encrypting their backups when they use Transfer Anywhere version 1.9, a new release of the multi-function (and multi-platform) utility unveiled by Linoma Software last month.

The new release will perform encrypted backups and restores up to 50 percent faster than before, according to Linoma, an iSeries utility developer based in Ashland, Nebraska. What's more, encrypted backups now occupy less disk space, according to the company. This is good news for any iSeries shop looking to add an extra layer of protection to their regular backups by using encryption.

The new release also brings support for more encryption algorithms. Users can now encrypt their backups using AES256, AES192, AES128, Open PGP, or ZIP. Transfer Anywhere can be used to perform encrypted back ups to portable media, such as tapes, or to an IFS file that is then distributed to another machine using network connections.

Support for Open PGP on the iSeries platform has also been boosted in Transfer Anywhere 1.9. With this release, Linoma now includes a native i5/OS Open PGP key management tool, which allows customers to create Open PGP keys and key rings, to manage their keys, export public keys to share with trading partners, and import public keys.

This new release also allows customers to perform Open PGP encryption on a file using multiple public keys, Linoma says. The encrypted file can then be shared with multiple trading partners, in which each partner uses its own private key to decrypt the file. In addition, Transfer Anywhere can now auto-detect the trading partner's preferred encryption, hash and compression algorithms from their Public key, Linoma says.

The product's file transfer capabilities have also been boosted. Users can set up secure FTP over SSL (FTPS) data transfers for trading partners more quickly with the new release as a result of the new support for popular certificate authorities, such as for VeriSign, Entrust, and Equifax. The release also provides support for Implicit SSL connections, which allows customers to connect to a wider range of FTPS servers, the company says.

Database encryption has also been boosted. With version 1.9, Linoma has added the capability to use AES256 to encrypt field-level data.

Linoma is also now supporting additional databases when using the FTP or e-mail capabilities of Transfer Anywhere. With this release, users can establish connections with Sybase and MySQL databases, in addition to the previously supported DB2, SQL Server, Oracle, and Informix databases.
