BOSaNOVA Upgrades Tablet Speeds, Cuts Price

Published: January 9, 2007

by Alex Woodie

BOSaNOVA last month unveiled two new Windows-based thin client tablet computers that offer more storage and processing power compared to previous models. The new 360XP and 360CE BOS tablets also got price reductions compared to their predecessors.

BOSaNOVA started shipping Windows-based tablets a little over two years ago, when it introduced the Windows CE-based 8375 Wireless Tablet and the 8368 Wireless Tablet, which ran the Windows XP Embedded operating system. With 8-inch color touch-screen displays, integrated wireless LAN, a 5250 emulator, and a weight around two pounds, the handy little thin clients were destined to connect mobile employees to iSeries servers in the healthcare, warehouse, and retail settings.

In December, the Phoenix, Arizona, company unveiled the latest generation of mobile tablets, the 360XP and 360CE, which replace the 366 Series. With 512 MB of RAM and a 1 GB disk on module (DOM) storage chip, the 360XP features twice the storage of the 366XP. Rounding out the list of new goodies is an integrated biometric sensor for secure authentication and a PCMCIA slot for expandability. The 360CE, meanwhile, gains a speedier LX 800 processor from AMD, the same processor used on the 360XP.

What's more, the list prices for both of these products have been dropped by more than $400. According to BOSaNOVA's Web site, the MSRP for the 360XP is now $1,795, while the 360CE is asking $1,550.

"By reducing the price and increasing performance we've opened the door for many companies to enhance their technology with this appealing option," says Martin Pladgeman, president of BOSaNOVA.
