IBM Increases Price on Tape Cartridges, Printers

Published: January 13, 2009

by Alex Woodie

IBM last week announced price increases for several enterprise tape cartridges models and InfoPrint printers.

IBM raised the prices on 32 versions of its System Storage 3599 tape cartridges, which are specialized versions of IBM's proprietary 3592 tape cartridges (formerly known as Magstar) that bring with them specific capacities, features (such as support for WORM), and quantities. Like the basic 3592 cartridge, the 3599 offerings are designed for the IBM System Storage TotalStorage 1120 tape drive.

The price increases range from $44 on the 3599-7006 (a five-pack of cleaning cartridges) to $712; and go up to $277 on the 3599-2421 (a 20-pack of WORM cartridges), which now costs $5,817.

IBM also raised the prices on some InfoPrint printers, which are now sold through the InfoPrint Solutions Company that IBM and Ricoh jointly own and operate.

The InfoPrint models that got a price jump are the 4550 series of office laser printers, which InfoPrint Solutions Company refers to as their 1800 series. The increases ranged from $50 on the model 4551 N01 (InfoPrint's 1832), which is now $754, to $101 on the model 4553 DN1 (InfoPrint 1872), which now costs $1,470.
