Malaysian Bank Picks Vision Solutions for HA

Published: February 12, 2008

United Overseas Bank Malaysia Berhad (UOB Malaysia) has implemented ORION HA for i5/OS to provide high availability for its System i servers, ORION HA's developer, Vision Solutions, announced last week.

As a subsidiary of Singapore's United Overseas Bank, UOB Malaysia is a part of one of the largest financial institutions in Asia. UOB Malaysia has assets of more than 37 billion Malaysian Ringgits (RM), or about $11.5 billion at current exchange rates, and operates more than 500 offices in 18 countries.

Like many mid size banks, UOB Malaysia runs much of its business on the IBM System i server, which is renown for its stability and security. However, even the world's greatest business computer can't run forever, and UOB Malaysia decided it needed to prepare its IT systems for the worst eventuality, in part by investing in high availability software.

UOB Malaysia looked at several high availability software suites before settling settled on ORION HA for i5/OS, one of three high availability offerings for the System i from Vision Solutions (the other being MIMIX and iTera HA).

According to Lee Yee Lih, vice president of IT for the company, the implementation went well. "Not only did ORION meet our requirements, implementation was smooth," she says, adding that the "software is easy to configure and allowed us to complete the mirroring process for our mission critical applications without any difficulty."

In the end, UOB Malaysia's decision to go with one of the Vision products had a lot to do with the vendor itself. "One of the reasons we chose ORION is because of the strength of vendor support," Lee says.

With ORION for i5/OS in place for business continuity, UOB Malaysia can feel secure knowing their data is protected, according to Allan Campbell, vice president of sales for Vision's Asia Pacific division. "We are honored such a prestigious financial institution as UOB-Malaysia chose ORION for its high availability solution," he says.
