Atempo Cuts Setup Time with Time Navigator 4.2

Published: March 4, 2008

by Alex Woodie

Atempo last week announced a new release of its backup and archive tool for System i and other platforms, Time Navigator, that should be quicker and easier to implement. Better application support and enhancements to its logs and alarms interface also distinguish Time Navigator 4.2, the first new release of the product in a year-and-a-half.

Time Navigator automates the backup, archiving, and regulatory compliance needs of companies running computers based on the i5/OS, Windows, Linux, Unix, OS X, VMS, and NetWare operating systems. The product provides continuous data protection (CDP), disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T), and virtual tape library (VTL) capabilities, and sports a graphical "image-oriented navigation" interface that makes it relatively easy for users to recover any file to any point in time by displaying representations of their libraries and files as they existed in the past--Time Navigator's most celebrated feature, and a handy one when important files are accidentally deleted, or programmers mistakenly write over production objects, or other critical data is lost.

With version 4.2, Atempo has taken several steps to make it easier to install the program, including simplifying the installation wizard, introducing a storage device auto-discovery tool, and adding a new configuration assistant to more easily set up the backup process.

Atempo has also enhanced its logs and alarms interface, improved its performance, and added support for Microsoft Sharepoint 2007 and Novell iFolder 3.

In other news, Atempo announced the acquisition of Lighthouse Global Technologies, developer of the E-Trail Digital Archive e-mail archiving solution. The company plans to sell Lighthouse's technology alongside its Atempo Archive Server, which it introduced in 2007.
