When it comes to Web application software development tools, the iSeries folks have plenty to choose from. Sometimes product enhancements can stand out as being exactly what a particular developer at a particular shop needs. The latest feature added to the Java-based tools from mrc is a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) and text editor for mrc-generated HTML presentation files. The tool is called m-Painter and it becomes part of the m-Power tool kit for building Java-based database, reporting, and forms applications without requiring manual coding.
According to mrc literature, users benefits include the convenience of toggling back and forth between the WYSIWYG and the plain text editor, the capability for changes to be previewed with live data rather than experiencing Web server (Tomcat or WebSphere Application Server) reload delays before replacing the existing HTML file with the Save/Deploy button, and it requires no mapped drive or special security.
Because m-Power generates Java servlets, the development environment can function on practically any platform. Applications will certainly be at home running on OS/400, Unix, Windows, and Linux platforms.
Everyone who is considering options for taking their RPG-based applications to the Web has to consider options that minimize recoding, re-keying, and repeating tasks. For some quick facts on m-Power, click here.
