Zend Heightens Obfuscation for PHP Apps

Published: April 18, 2006

by Alex Woodie

With native PHP coming to the platform, it's just a matter of time before vendors start selling PHP-based applications to the iSeries community. Zend Technologies, the company backing the commercialization of the open-source scripting language, offers a product called Zend Guard that protects PHP investments, while helping vendors distribute their code.

Zend Guard is comprised of two key components, including the Zend Guard encoder and the Zend Guard license manager, which enables the protection and mass distribution of commercial PHP applications and gives the users the option of licensing models, such as concurrent users, time limited, segment of network, or server specific.

With Zend Guard version 4, the company has boosted protection against reverse engineering by improving the encoding phase, the company says, adding that the product now offers three layers of obfuscation. Guard 4 also sports an easier-to-use interface, new wizards, and support for the latest version of PHP, version 5.1.

"Developers need the strongest, easiest-to-use and most flexible tools to protect their code," says Doron Gerstel, president and CEO of Zend Technologies. "With Zend Guard, they get the horsepower to protect their intellectual property and their revenue."

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, a Paperless Process Management (PPM) strategy can significantly benefit your company.

1) Are you still using expensive pre-printed forms to create mission-critical documents
such as invoices, statements, and purchase orders?

2) Do employees waste numerous hours a week stuffing envelopes and manually
     faxing documents?

3) Do you wish you could automate the delivery of documents via fax or email, based on
     each recipient's preference?

4) Is it hard to find and share information between departments and outside groups such as
     customers and vendors?

5) Do you wish that parts of your business process, such as document approval and delivery,
     could be automated?

6) Is your security weak because you lack the ability to designate different levels of authority to
     employees, documents, and/or processes?

A Paperless Process Management (PPM) solution can significantly help. It intelligently creates, captures, processes, archives, retrieves and delivers business documents while managing them through their lifecycle - with the rules and regulations that you demand. Since PPM tools are displayed within your normal business applications and desktop, little (if any) user training or maintenance is required. Additionally, PPM's flexibility allows you to implement a complete solution or enhance a particular area of your business process.
