VAI Offers Panasonic Toughbooks to ERP Customers

Published: April 21, 2009

by Alex Woodie

VAI last week announced that it will begin selling Panasonic's line of Toughbook computers to its ERP customers. With a magnesium alloy case, high-contrast LCD screen, and an array of wireless networking gear, Panasonic's Toughbook line is ideal for customers who work in harsh environments.

With customers in distribution, construction, manufacturing, and other industries not necessarily known for calm, idyllic, yoga-inducing settings, VAI figured it would do well to offer customers a PC that's as tough and resilient as the System i-based ERP system on which they have come to rely. The search ended at Panasonic, which, in addition to making excellent plasma monitors and cordless telephones, is also in the business of making notebooks PCs that can survive a having a brick dropped on them.

VAI is the most excited about the Panasonic Toughbook U1, which it classifies as an "ultra-mobile-rugged" design, (as opposed to Panasonic's "business-rugged," "semi-rugged," or "fully-rugged" designs). The handy little U1 features a 1.33 GHz Intel Atom processor, a solid-state hard drive, and a 5.6-inch LED touchscreen that can be viewed in the sunlight and is water resistant. Users can interact with the U1 with a stylus or through the smallish keyboard, which is backlit for use in the dark.

VAI has begun offering the Panasonic Toughbook U1 "ultra-mobile-rugged" notebook PC to its ERP customers.

The U1 offers an array of wireless and security options, including air cards for use in any of the major carriers' 3G mobile networks, a GPS receiver, and a barcode and RFID reader. Users can stay on the go for up to nine hours thanks to twin hot-swappable Lithium ion batteries. The U1's fanless design helps to reduce noise, weight, and energy consumption.

The U1 will be a great fit for mobile workers who need access to their company's ERP system, says Kevin Beasley, CIO of VAI. "Toughbook U1 complements our solutions nicely, since it provides reliable access to the data and information necessary to run an effective business," he says. "Streamlined operations are a core promise delivered via our S2K software, and making real-time information accessible to mobile workers saves time, money, and increases productivity."

VAI is offering the Toughbook U1 through a partnership with Panasonic Computer Solutions Company, a unit of Panasonic Corporation of North America, the principal North American subsidiary of Panasonic Corporation.

Smart i Mobile Debuts at Key Info booth 501
Smart i Mobile is being introduced at the 2009 COMMON Conference & Expo by Key Information Systems at booth 501.

Smart i mobile enables users to receive data from the Smart i BI platform and will run on a Blackberry, iPhone or any handheld mobile device.

Smart i Mobile provides an executive dashboard on mobile devices that will initially run on the Android platform. Android brings Internet-style innovation and openness to mobile phones and was designed by the Google and the Open Handset Alliance and allows developers to write managed code in the Java language, controlling the device via Java compatible code running on a virtual machine especially designed for mobile devices. See: www.android.com and www.openhandsetalliance.com.

Smart i Mobile was designed in collaboration between Key Information Systems, Systech Solutions and Intelligent Applications Hatchery LLC. It allows users to view a graphical representation of critical data generated by Smart i Appliance, an IBM i based data warehousing implementation.

Smart i Mobile graphs will directly link to the numerous Smart i reports generated by IBM DB2 Web Query. Data is automatically refreshed each time the information in Smart i data warehousing reports is updated. Clickable graphs allow users to navigate through the data behind the graphs.

New Panel on DB2 Web Query
Here's the newest addition to COMMON's 2009 program:

Title    Power i as an Industrial Strength Native BI Platform
When  April 28th; 2:00 - 3:15 pm

Background
The Power i is an excellent platform for data marts or an enterprise-level data warehouse. It is robust, reliable and the cornerstone of thousands of data centers. However, it's lacking in BI applications. IT has had to resort to different platforms based on MS SQL Server or UNIX for BI services to provide analytics services.

Covered
    · What is the state of IBM's DB2 Web Query data warehousing tool and how has it changed?
    · What new products are taking advantage of the new capabilities of Web Query?
    · Who has been using these new BI analytics products?

Should I Attend?
Yes, if you use or are interested in IBM's DB2 Web Query plus an ETL data transformation tool to make your i platform server your main BI machine.

What Will I Learn?
    · Why to consider the Power i as a BI analytics platform at your installation
    · Learn about using IBM DB2 Web Query as the BI engine
    · How Open Source ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) and Data Integration tools can move data
from any database to the System i or the IBM Power Server.
    · Hear direct experiences from members of FIDM and the Smart i launch team.
