CA Finds Data Modeling Solace in ERwin

Keeping tabs on database dependencies during the application development process can be a real chore. To help developers automate some of these complicated tasks, CA sells a suite of tools called the AllFusion Modeling Suite. This week the company shipped AllFusion Modeling Suite r7, a new release of its tool suite that includes a patented generalized data modeling (GDM) engine embedded in its AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler.
The new GDM engine helps developers by delivering model consistency and full session undo/redo/reverse and model change management capabilities, CA says. It also provides users with a high degree of control of their database architecture, and enables them to optimize database design.
Keeping tabs on database design is a difficult, but necessary, task, especially when you're dealing with critical business processes with a larger number of increasingly complex applications, says David Schipper, vice president of product management at CA. "With this latest release, CA is helping customers more effectively and efficiently meet their database architecture challenges by simplifying and streamlining critical design and development tasks," he says.
Other new features in r7 include support for Oracle 10g and 9i databases; a redesigned "complete compare" capability that enables users to analyze the potential impact of database design changes among any combination of models, scripts, and databases; and a better user experience, CA says.
The AllFusion Modeling Suite supports a variety of databases, including those running on DB2/400, DB2 for z/OS, DB2 UDB (for Linux, Unix, and Windows), SQL Server, Ingres, Sybase, and Teradata.
