Hardware Foundry Web Site Goes Live

Published: May 2, 2006

Open source has revolutionized the way that software is developed. And while nobody's arguing that hardware hasn't benefited from the development of standards, it could benefit quite a bit if hardware designers adopted more of the open source software ethos. So says IT Jungle's president and editor in chief, Timothy Prickett Morgan, in his essay introducing the Hardware Foundry in yesterday's The Four Hundred.

"I think that just as open source has been good for software--where the code, documentation, and specifications of code are put in the public domain--the same thing would be good for hardware design," TPM writes. "What is good for an operating system or a database is equally as good for a PC, a server, a storage area network, a hammer, a car, a jet engine, a spaceship, or a wrench."

We are just baby steps into the Hardware Foundry, which is going to be a clearinghouse for design info, benchmarks, and other data a community of people will need to build their own machines from common parts. But the beginnings are there, and you are welcome to check out the site and start contributing at www.hardwarefoundry.com.
