Valid Puts i OS Security Expert Botz on Loan to COMMON Membership

Published: May 5, 2009

by Alex Woodie

What more can you get from your COMMON membership dues? Consider this: Valid Technologies will shortly announce a new promotion whereby they will send renowned i OS security expert Pat Botz--a recent addition to the Valid consulting crew--to the shop of any COMMON member, au gratis, for an onsite assessment of Valid's i OS-based biometric authentication technology. Travel expenses must be paid, but that's quite a deal, nonetheless.

Botz formerly was the lead architect for OS/400 security at IBM, and also worked in other customer-facing capacities within IBM's services group. He left IBM in 2007 to help found security services firm Group 8 Security. Botz has written several articles for IT Jungle and other publications, and is now working for Valid Technologies in the capacity of a consultant.

As part of this new gig, Botz gets to travel around the country, visiting System i shops, doing security assessments, analyzing authentication mechanisms, and trying to drive deals for Valid Secure Systems Authentication (VSSA). VSSA is Valid's i OS-based software that enables companies to replace password-based authentication systems (and all the baggage that comes with passwords) with secure biometric fingerprint readers.

As part of the on-site assessments, Botz will determine the cost of relying on passwords for secure authentication. He will also help the customer to determine how much money they could save by shifting to a combination of single sign-on (SSO) and VSSA technologies. Customers can also get a complementary 30-day installation of VSSA, which includes two biometric fingerprint readers (an $80 value!) and a license for 10 enrolled users.

Of course, there is some fine print to the deal. Botz can't visit all of COMMON's 4,000 members at the same time, so a visit by Botz is subject to prior commitments. Organizations must also have at least 100 employees to be eligible for the offer. In addition to the complementary on-site visit by Botz or other VSSA consultants participating COMMON members will also receive a solution design and 30-day trial.

For more information or to schedule Pat Botz in your shop, contact Valid Tech through its Web site at www.validtech.com.
