Kisco Clamps Down on FTP Exposure with SafeNet/400

Published: May 27, 2008

by Alex Woodie

Interested in restricting which objects users can and cannot access via FTP, and which IP addresses they can FTP files to? If so, then you might be interested in the latest release of SafeNet/400 from Kisco Information Systems, which has implemented object-level security controls with version 8.5.

Since Kisco broke ground more than 12 years ago with the launch of the AS/400 industry's first exit point monitoring program with SafeNet/400, the Internet has grown exponentially more dangerous. Kisco has also gained a lot of competitors in what has become a crowded market. But with the latest release of SafeNet/400, Kisco and its development partner, MP Associates of Westchester (New York), are showing that they're not done innovating when it comes to security for i (formerly i5/OS and OS/400).

With SafeNet/400 version 8.5, Kisco has implemented object-level controls for the i OS' FTP Client program. When implemented, this enables administrators to control which objects on the i OS-based Power Systems server (formerly System i) the FTP Client users will be permitted to access when connecting to various foreign systems, Kisco says.

Similarly, the new release also implements IP address controls, which limit the destination IP addresses that users can connect to. Taken together, the enhancements significantly improve i security, the company says.

The new release also improves upon the product's automatic notification feature. Administrators can now store e-mail addresses directly in the product, which makes it easier to send e-mail alerts to management when a security violation is detected. Kisco has also made the download and installation of the product simpler, and updated the documentation.

SafeNet/400 is available in four versions: SafeNet/400 Lite, SafeNet/400 Basic, SafeNet/400 Advanced, and SafeNet/400 Enterprise. Pricing has not changed for any of the versions with this release. For a description of the four different versions and a price schedule, see www.kisco.com.
