CCSS Publishes High Availability White Paper

Interested in learning more about System i high availability issues, including how to pick the right high availability solution and how to calculate the cost of your downtime? Then you might want to check out a new white paper that i5/OS systems management specialist CCSS has published on its Web site.

CCSS' new white paper, titled "Availability Monitoring on the IBM System i," takes a look at high availability from several angles, including the effects of downtime on different parts of an organization, various failures that could cause downtime, and ways to calculate the financial toll that downtime can have on an organization. The paper also includes a case study of a downtime event of a major (unnamed) retailer and discusses the consequences of downtime in financial services organizations.

Paul Ratchford, CCSS' product manager, says downtime is a threat that System i administrators should take seriously. "Although the iSeries platform itself is known for its stability, a lack of availability is a problem that can affect any organization to varying degrees," he says. "Those degrees are measurable and can be pinpointed to a dollar figure which can be quite alarming."

Ratchford says it should be the goal of System i system administrators to eliminate all possible sources of downtime. "The onus is on system managers to tackle the issue in such a way that, short of the most extreme and unforeseen circumstances, there is no likelihood of unplanned downtime," he says. "In speaking to customers and users alike, we can see a majority trend moving increasingly towards a zero tolerance status as far as unplanned downtime is concerned."
