DVD Retailer Integrates iSeries With Alpha for MMS, POS

Published: June 5, 2007

by Dan Burger

Replacing a merchandise management system (MMS) and point of sale (POS) system that was prone to error and cumbersome to work with has led the world's largest DVD retailer to Alpha Retail Technology, and its MMS and POS software. The new software integrates with an iSeries server, which manage financial, catalog inventory, and other business applications.

Infinity Resources, the parent company of the DVD retailer DVDPlanet, made its software search contingent on a product that could manage cyclical trends and replenishment profiles based on factors associated with each title, such as release date and seasonal demands. It required the capability to handle large customer counts in the retail stores and a growing Internet order volume through DeepDiscount.com. It also needed to provide real-time visibility across a multi-channel enterprise and the capability to manage a large number of SKUs.

Because the retail industry endures high employee turnover, Infinity Resources saw great value in the user-friendly POS that allows quick training (a cost reduction) of its store employees. Compared to its previous point of sale software, there is a noticeable reduction in the number of keystrokes needed to complete a transaction (better workflow).

After comparing what he termed as "a lot of systems," Randy San Miguel, CIO of Infinity Resources, said the choice of Alpha Enterprise Retail System (AlphaERS) was easy. "Partnering with Alpha Retail will allow us to successfully replace our legacy systems in time for our new store opening scheduled for June 2007."
