Stonesoft Prepares Security Tools for Disaster Scenarios

Stonesoft today announced a new release of StoneGate Management Center (SMC), a Linux-based management console used to manage and control Stonesoft's point security solutions. With SMC version 4, Stonesoft has added new replication features that boost the product's capability to function during a disaster.

Stonesoft, you might recall, was the only security vendor interested in developing a firewall solution for the iSeries following IBM's removal of OS/400's firewall product several years ago. The Finish company prefers to develop (not surprisingly) in Linux, but just the same, it has obtained some valuable knowledge of the importance of protecting data on System i servers and other servers, which its two main products, StoneGate Firewall/VPN and its Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), can accomplish.

With SMC 4.0, the company has introduced new high availability clustering features that replicate security control across up to five remote data centers, including one primary and four standby units. In this way, data center operators can stay on top of their security posture and the readiness of security devices, even if they lose a primary data center (which, depending on the nature of the event, might just be when security products are their most valuable).

Stonesoft also launched version 4 of its IPS suite. The new version offers protection against the HTTP POST Web server attacks that were first disclosed several weeks ago by CERT. According to Stonesoft, its IPS blocks the attacks through the use of regular expressions and protocol anomaly detection. The technique is superior to traditional IPS solutions that rely only on signatures to define intrusions and do not currently have the capabilities to fully decode Fullwidth Unicode encoded HTTP POST data.
