Ericom Launches Virtual Desktop Solution

Published: July 24, 2007

by Alex Woodie

Ericom, a provider of terminal emulation solutions for 5250, 3270, and Windows servers, last week unveiled PowerTerm WebConnect DeskView, a new virtualized desktop offering that enables organizations to run their users' Windows or Linux desktops in a virtual partition on a server, and access them from any secure computer or thin client.

The move to server-based architectures has left some users behind, according to Ericom. Only about 75 percent of users at organizations implementing Windows terminal services are able to use the services to access their applications. The rest, who are typically power users, use virtual desktop solutions to achieve remote access. But having these two separate approaches increases the management costs for IT, and hurts security.

Ericom's solution to this problem is WebConnect DeskView, a new offering that allows IT managers to deploy virtual desktops and Windows terminal services side by side, thereby eliminating the problem of maintaining separate emulation environments for the two groups of users.

WebConnect DeskView works with the virtualization offerings from Microsoft, Xen, VMWare, and others, and allows users to access their Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux desktops from any secure browser-based terminal. Groups of users with identical application requirements can be configured to access desktops from an allocated desktop set, while users with special requirements can be granted a specific virtual machine to use.

"By supporting a mixed infrastructure of Virtual Desktops and Windows Terminal Servers, PowerTerm WebConnect bridges the gap between partial and complete virtualization," says Eran Heyman, Ericom Founder and CEO commented.
