Zend's PHP Offering Expands Options for iSeries Developers

The announcement yesterday of the general availability of Zend Technology's PHP runtime environment for IBM iSeries servers heralds the delivery of a new world of open-source development for iSeries users. With the runtime engine now available as a free download, more than 10,000 PHP programs distributed under open-source licenses become fair game for iSeries PHP developers, who can adopt the programs as-is or use them as components of a larger application. FalconStor Virtualizes the Virtual Tape

FalconStor Software recently unveiled new virtualization technology that it says will dramatically increase the capacity of virtual tape libraries (VTLs). The new Single Instance Repository (SIR) technology, as it's called, works by storing only the changed-data, thereby reducing storage requirements and increasing the number of recovery points available on the VTL. IBM last week unveiled version 6 releases of Host Access Client Package (HACP) for Multiplatform and for iSeries, two bundles that each includes new releases of two emulators: Personal Communications for Microsoft Windows and WebSphere Host On-Demand. The new releases bring several enhancements, including support for Kerberos sign-on, the capability to run on Windows x64 editions, compatibility with IBM's Workplace technology, and various new screen, keypad, and mouse functions.
