Zephyr Supports 5250 Emulator on Tablet PCs
Zephyr's terminal emulation software can now be used on tablet PCs. The Houston software company announced last week that its PASSPORT PC TO HOST and PASSPORT WEB TO HOST emulators for OS/400, mainframe, and Unix servers are now supported on Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. There are many potential uses for a host-enabled tablet PC, according to the company. For example, physicians could reduce the time they spend on patients by directly entering notes and comments in patients' medical records through tablet PCs, the company says. Or an insurance claim adjuster could use a tablet PC and a digital camera to take pictures of a damaged car and instantly transfer the images to the tablet PC by using a USB connection. Zephyr says it has tested its PASSPORT software on Motion Computing's Motion 1300 tablet PC but there is no reason why it will not work on other tablet PCs as well.
Bowstreet Portlets Give Executives Access to OS/400-Based Financial Data
Winholesale Business Services is giving its executives better access to mainframe- and AS/400-based financial data through a WebSphere portal and Bowstreet's Portlet Factory. Winholesale is migrating to a Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) environment, and the capability to rapidly develop role-based views into financial reports, without having deep Java experience, was the differentiating factor in Winholesale's selection of Bowstreet, the software company said. Winholesale executives will be given portlet-based views into various dissections of financial data, giving them a snapshot of the overall health of the organization, and the capability to drill down further to look at regions, territories, and even individual companies. Winholesale Business Services provides IT services to Winholesale, a collection of wholesale distributors of plumbing supplies, industrial equipment, heating and cooling materials, electrical equipment, waterworks supplies, pumps, fasteners, and electronics. Bowstreet delivered support for the iSeries earlier this year (see "Bowstreet Brings 'Portlet Factory' to iSeries").
