The HTE division of SunGard is planning an October release of NaviLine version 5.0, a new version of its Web-based interface for core OS/400 applications. With version 5.0, municipalities and other government entities that use HTE's software to manage their operations should find a cleaner, more intuitive interface.
Lake Mary, Florida-based SunGard HTE develops two lines of software for police departments, planning departments, water districts, and other government entities that must process and store mounds of data--one that runs on Windows, and another that runs on iSeries servers. However, users of the iSeries version aren't relegated to using a green-screen interface, thanks in large part to the NaviLine version of the products, which give browser-based access to HTE Financials, HTE Utilities, HTE Public Safety, and other members of SunGard HTE's OS/400 suite. The old green-screen version of these products is referred to as Select.
With NaviLine 5.0, the company plans to make many improvements to the product, including a new menu system that features a Windows Explorer-style interface; true "word wrapping" and spell-check functionality; improved "focus highlighting" that will help to visibly indicate when users need to fill in a form; a more appealing "at-a-glance" inquiry screen; and new maintenance screens that build on the at-a-glace functionality.
Perhaps most importantly, NaviLine 5.0 will deliver "keyboard input buffering," which should let users whiz through GUI screens in much the same way they've grown accustomed to in the green-screen world.
"The HTE NaviLine system is now a much more compelling option for customers who wish to move beyond the current Select (green screen) interface," says Todd Baum, NaviLine product manager. "NaviLine uses Java, a more modern software language, and that increases our capabilities far beyond the former iSeries Select platform."
