SNMP Software from COMTEK Gives Up Lock on QSYSOPR

Published: August 26, 2008

by Alex Woodie

COMTEK Services, a New Hampshire consultancy and developer of software for i OS and other operating systems, recently launched a new release of its simple network management protocol (SNMP) software for i OS, called NMServer for AS/400.

NMServer for AS/400 is software that augments the native SNMP trap supplied by IBM with a series of SNMP "subagents" that extend the system monitoring capabilities on the server. The software enables users to set thresholds or view performance-related data for more than 75 categories, such as CPU utilization, disk usage, and job status, via standard SNMP consoles, such as Hewlett-Packard's OpenView. The software also includes a complete Management Information Base, or MIB; enables users to monitor queues; and includes a remote management feature.

Earlier this year, COMTEK (not to be confused with COMTek) introduced version 3.06 of NMServer for AS/400 (which the company sometimes called COMTEK/400). With version 3.06, the software no longer required a lock on QSYSOPR when monitoring QSYSOPR, thereby allowing other applications to share that powerful user profile. The company made minor tweaks with COMTEK 3.07, which shipped last month.
