United Computer Group, an IBM reseller based near Cleveland, Ohio, has teamed up with EVault to offer an online backup solution called VAULT400, the companies announced last month.
VAULT400 utilizes a private-label version of EVault's online backup technology, which has been available for more than two years. EVault decided to license the technology to UCG because it "demonstrated a high level of knowledge and experience with regard to the market," according to EVault vice president William da Cunha.
There's a considerable need in the market for better backup and recovery technology, says UCG president James Kandrac. Too few business owners have disaster recovery systems in place, and those who do "keep their fingers crossed because they have heard the horror stories about data on backup tapes being unreliable."
With VAULT400, data is backed up to UCG's data center in Columbus, Ohio, over the Internet, and is made available for recovery at any time of day. The service can be set up to support a single location, or for multiple locations, and is encrypted to prevent snooping.
UCG has made considerable investments in ensuring its Columbus data center stays up and running during a disaster, including the installation of a 150 kVA online UPS, a DC plan with 12,800 amp hours of DC backup, a one million watt generator, and more than 3 million BTUs of cooling capacity.
