Ricoh Debuts New Multifunction Color Laser Printer

Published: October 16, 2007

by Alex Woodie

Ricoh Americas recently launched a new color multifunction printer, the Aficio MP C2000. Designed to support the document workflow needs of office workers, the C2000 laser printer provides a full range of paper handling features and prints at the rate of 20 pages per minute, for a price around $10,000.

As the New Jersey subsidiary of Ricoh, the Japanese electronics giant that bought IBM's printing division earlier this year for $725 million, Ricoh is suddenly front and center at many iSeries and System i shops these days. When it comes time to buy new workgroup or production printers, Ricoh, the Info Print Solutions (the joint venture between Ricoh and IBM), and Xerox will often be on the shortlist.

If an affordable workgroup MFP is what you need, the new C2000 may be worth looking into. This device provides an array of document management functions, including printing, scanning, archiving, e-mail, and fax capabilities, and connects to all major operating systems, including i5/OS via Host Print Transform, enabling PCL, PostScript, PDF, or and Refined Printing Command Stream (RPCS) jobs to be executed.

In terms of usability, the C2000 can be controlled from a full-color LCD panel, while programming and monitoring tasks can be accomplished from separate utilities. As a document server, the C2000 can store up to 40 GB worth of documents. As a scanner, it supports full-color scanning at speeds up to 50 inches per minute at the default resolutions of 200 dots per inch (DPI).

The C2000 can hold up to 3,200 sheets of paper (with the optional Large Capacity Tray), and allows users to produce documents with multiple media types, weights, and orientations. It comes with a variety of finishing features, including automatic stackless duplexing, 2 or 3-hole punching, and the capability to create folded, saddle-stitch booklets. With these capabilities, workers won't need to send jobs to an outside vendor when customized, professional documents are needed.

The Aficio MP C2000 is available at a suggested retail price of $9,865, while the Aficio MP C2000SPF, which includes fax, is available for $10,988.
