Rocket Gets Windows 7 Cert for BlueZone Emulator

Published: November 10, 2009

System i shops that are looking for Windows 7 compatible emulators were given another option last week when Rocket Software announced that versions 5.0 and 5.1 of its BlueZone emulator are certified for Microsoft Windows 7.

BlueZone is a family of terminal emulators designed to run on a variety of clients, including PCs, Web browsers, and mobile clients. The core BlueZone offering, called BlueZone, supports 5250, 3270, T27, UTS, and VT emulations, and also provides a Secure FTP client. The company also sells a three-tiered Web-based emulator called BlueZone Access Server, a dedicated BlueZone Secure FTP product, and an X Windows emulator called BlueZoneX.

Windows 7 certification was an important step for BlueZone, says Jeremy Sharp, senior vice president of sales for the BlueZone division of Rocket Software. "BlueZone has always been one of the first vendors to support and get certified for new Microsoft operating systems and this is no exception," he says in an announcement.

Because of the maturity of the terminal emulator market, most emulator vendors use a replacement approach to market their software. BlueZone is no exception, and the vendor claims customers can save 50 to 90 percent off annual maintenance fees compared to other vendors.

BlueZone is a Virginia-based company that was originally called Renex before being acquired by Seagull Software in 2001. Seagull was acquired by Rocket Software in December 2006. The BlueZone Access Server product was originally developed by Farabi, which Seagull acquired in March 2006.
