Binary Tree Debuts E-Mail Migration Tool for Exchange 2010

Published: November 17, 2009

by Alex Woodie

Microsoft last week announced the general availability of Exchange Server 2010, and already, software vendors such as Binary Tree are lining up with new tools to migrate IBM Domino e-mail environments to the new version of Exchange.

The new version of Binary Tree's Common Migration Tool (CMT) for Exchange will be available next month. According to the New Jersey software company, the new release of CMT will make it easier than ever to move Domino mail stores to Exchange Server 2010, running either on-premise or over the Internet as a service.

Many Exchange customers are expected to run "in the cloud" as the result of enhancements Microsoft made with Exchange 2010. According to Microsoft, Exchange 2010 runs as well in the cloud as it does on Windows Server 2008 R2, the targeted server operating system for Exchange deployments.

"Migrating from Notes/Domino to an on-premises or online version of Microsoft Exchange Server can be a major project for any IT department," Binary Tree CTO Vadim Gringolts said in a statement. "With our CMT suite of software and solutions, customers can confidently migrate from Lotus Notes and Domino to Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 without interrupting service for users."

However, Binary Tree will fill a gap in co-existence environments (where customers run both Domino and Exchange at the same time) that Microsoft left with Exchange 2010.

According to Binary Tree, users will be able to support directory synchronization and free/busy calendar lookups between both environments when they use CMT for Coexistence with ZApp (Zero-touch Application Remediation). Microsoft supported such tasks in previous releases of Exchange, but removed it for Exchange 2010, Binary Tree says.
