Determine WebSphere Service Pack Level

Hey, Ted:

I read Shannon O'Donnell's article about not using the WebSphere Development Studio tools' Service Pack 4 if you program in IBM's VisualAge for RPG. Shannon explained that shops must uninstall SP4 if they program in VARPG because SP4 introduces communication errors ["Warning: IBM Tells VARPG Developers Not to Use SP4," Guild Companies, December 11].

But I don’t know what Service Pack level is installed on my PC for the WDS tools. How can I determine this, so I’ll know if I need to reload WDS and an older SP, as Shannon described?

Avoiding Record Locks in RPG

Hey, Ted:

Some of our users are in the habit of using file maintenance programs to look up information. We've provided them with inquiry screens, but old habits die hard.

This practice causes problems for other jobs that update the locked records. The programs freeze for a minute or two and then send an error message.

How can we keep an RPG program from freezing up when it tries to randomly read a record that is locked by another job?
