Hey, David:

Regarding the RPG code discussed in the article, "Removing and Replacing Characters Using SQL," [Midrange Guru, OS/400 Edition, December 12, 2001], there is a much easier way to accomplish the objective: Use the IBM-supplied BIF %REPLACE(). That might have gotten the executable code down to one line.

A CPYF Idiosyncrasy


Hey, Ted:

I have a problem with the Copy File (CPYF) command. When I use a CPYF command in a CL program and put a variable in the value argument of the Include records by field test (INCREL) parameter, the system copies all the records that start with the non-blank contents of this variable.

Reader Feedback and Insights
I read your response to the Linux question in the October 5, 2001 issue of Midrange Guru, OS/400 Edition. It seems like the reader's question really asked which Linux distribution to choose, as opposed to which user interface (i.e., KDE, GNOME) to use. IBM uses various distributions for its product lines (i.e., Caldera, SuSE, and Red Hat). But reciting that short list doesn't answer the question directly. Each distribution has various strengths and weaknesses that require evaluation.
