Remote Control of a Terminal Session

Hey, David and Ted:

At one time, I thought there was an easy way to take control of an AS/400 terminal session from a different session. In a sense, I'm trying to accomplish a remote demo.

Did I just imagine such a thing?

If the sessions are on PCs, you can use a package like Symantec's PC Anywhere or Famatech's Radmin to remotely control one PC.

Another great utility for remotely controlling computers is Virtual Network Computing, or VNC. VNC is a free client-server application that allows client machines to access a display session on a server. To use this technique, both clients and server must be running VNC. Unlike PC Anywhere or Radmin, the client and server do not have to be running the same operating system.

IBM has a VNC for the iSeries that you can install if you have PASE. You can download VNC for the iSeries free from IBM's iSeries Tools for Developers Web page. Although VNC is free for the iSeries, it requires the Portable Application Solutions Environment (PASE) and Perl, which is part of the iSeries Tools for Developers PRPQ. However, it sounds as if these solutions may be overkill. If you only want a simple demo, you can use the Start Copy Screen (STRCPYSCN) command. Run it from the remote terminal. Specify the other terminal ID in the Source device parameter and *REQUESTER in the output device. The operator at the source terminal will receive a message saying that the remote device has issued STRCPYSCN. The operator must reply with G to permit STRCPYSCN.

The remote session will see the displays of the copied session, but will lag one screen behind. The operator of the source terminal can update the remote user's display by pressing the Home key. After the Home key is pressed, the remote user will see the exact contents of the source device. Therefore, when running STRCPYSCN, the operator of the source device should press the Home key whenever the display changes. Be aware that not all applications enable the Home key.
