More Qshell Output in ASCII

Hey, Ted:

I'm writing in reference to your article, "Wanted: Qshell Output in ASCII," Midrange Guru, OS/400 Edition. Isn't the conversion issue more properly handled by the share configuration?

In order to see the Integrated File System (IFS) from a PC, isn't it true that a file share has to be created in Operations Navigator? The Text Conversion tab of the share properties provides a way to specify which files should be automatically converted.

This is how I handle the problem.

You are correct, Stan. The Text Conversion tab allows a user of Operations Navigator (OpsNav) to specify which files, by extension, should be converted to ASCII if necessary.

This means, of course, that the file translation has to be set up for each OpsNav user.

In addition to this method and the touch method that I presented in that article, you can also use the setccsid utility.

setccsid 819 mydata.csv

Running setccsid does not convert the data in the file, so you will have to reload the file to get the data in the proper format.
