It Looks Bad, but V5R1 Express Error is Harmless
Hey, Joe:
I liked your response on "The
V5R1 Client Access Licensing Configuration People Miss."
In my case, my licensing was applied correctly after an
OS/400 V5R1 upgrade, but I keep receiving another Client
Access Family for Windows (5722XW1) licensing error.
Message ID CPF9E1F for 5722XW1 now appears in the QSYSOPR
message queue saying, "Attempt made to change length of
the license user, resulting code 1." What's going on here
and is this bad for my system?

Don't worry, it isn't a major problem. My shop has just
installed a new three-way 820 LPAR machine with OS/400 V5R1
and we're seeing CPF9E1F on all three partitions. We also
upgraded two other machines to V5R1 and the error registered
on each of these machines, as well. So, CPF9E1F seems to be
universal when you install the Client Access Family for
Windows (5722XW1) product on a V5R1 machine.
The message detail for CPF9E1F result code 1 says, "01--Because
there were not current users, length of license user was
changed and user was added." This message is no help at all,
and it's not even grammatically correct. I checked all the
available documentation and there wasn't much information
there, either. So, I contacted IBM's
Client Access Group and here's what they told me:
The CPF9E1F error is a known problem on OS/400
V5R1 servers. It appears to be a side effect of the way a
Client Access license is requested when the Central Server
jobs are started. As a result, CPF9E1F is an informational
message that shows up in the job log, and it doesn't affect
Client Access license request processing.
Since it's a benign problem, IBM decided to forego fixing
it in this release but a fix should appear in the next OS/400
release (which will probably be OS/400 V5R2, which is rumored
to be released in the summer).
IBM has documented the CPF9E1F problem with a new Authorized
Problem Analysis Report (APAR) on their iSeries
and AS/400 Technical Support Web site. APAR II13217 is
the report you're looking for, and it can be reached from the
iSeries and AS/400 Technical Support Web site by clicking on
the APAR link and performing a search in the V5R1 APARs section.
IBM will also be creating a link to II13217 on the Client
Access Express APAR Web site.
This is a nuisance message that does not affect your system,
and it will disappear sometime in a future release. It's a
shame that it showed up at all and we had to waste time and
energy trying to figure out what the problem is. I hope that
we won't see many more unknown Client Access messages like
this in the future.
