Job Scheduler's Other Defaults

Hey, Ted:

We used the Work with Job Schedule Entries (WRKJOBSCDE) command to call an RPG program. The scheduled job ran reliably day after day. Then we wrote a CL program that did some preliminary processing before calling the RPG program. We changed the job schedule entry to call the CL program instead. The CL program ended abnormally because it couldn't find a command in the library list.

I thought the job scheduler saved library list information, but apparently not. How does the job scheduler know which libraries to include in the library list when it kicks off a job?

--Beau

Normally, the Submit Job (SBMJOB) command passes the submitting job's library list to the submitted job. However, the job scheduler doesn't use that default. In fact, the job scheduler uses non-default values for several parameters.

SBMJOB uses the special value *CURRENT for all of the parameters in the following table, except for the routing data, whose value defaults to QCMDB. These values are used when the job scheduler submits a job:

  • Print device: *JOBD
  • Output queue: *JOBD
  • Print text: *JOBD
  • Routing entry: *JOBD
  • Initial library list: *JOBD
  • System library list: *SYSVAL
  • Current library: *USRPRF
  • Coded character set ID: *USRPRF
  • Language ID: *USRPRF
  • Country ID: *USRPRF
  • Sort sequence: *USRPRF

To fix your CL program so that it will run properly under the job scheduler, modify the library list of the job description.

Snap-eBooks is a new publishing company dedicated to the principle
that great products and tools do not have to cost a lot!

Snap-eBooks completely disagrees with the current industry practice that says that you should charge whatever the market will bear for AS/400 related products.

We believe that keeping the prices of our products low makes them accessible and affordable for everyone in our industry including programmers, operators, administrators, managers, and pretty much anyone else. After all, why should a book cost $89? At that price, only companies or corporations can afford them. Our low prices also mean that you can purchase however many eBooks you need, and get them when you need them.

Each eBook is full of step-by-step information that you can use to immediately learn a given topic in a short amount of time.

Download the Lightning-Guide eReader and then take a look at our sample eBook, called Introduction to Visual Age for RPG, and check it out for yourself just how useful our products really are.

See for yourself.
