Reader Feedback and Insights: Why Java?

Hey, Ted:

With the ease in which an RPG programmer can write a CGI application that presents a graphical interface that is dynamic and easily capable of making database updates, why would anyone bother with Java? Is Java sweeping the iSeries community, or is that what IBM would like us to think? E-RPG, as it is commonly called, is so great that I do not understand the big Java push. Is it something that I should learn, and, if so, how?
