The Top 10 Reasons to Learn Java Dear Readers: In response to Gary's question about whether he should learn Java, a reader named Mark offers 10 reasons why Gary should ["Reader Feedback and Insights: Why Java?"]. Reason 1: Bosses believe the spin. Reason 2: Bosses don't want to strap themselves to Microsoft and iSeries learning curves when Java proclaims to cut them in half. Reason 3: That is what the cheap labor, both abroad and imported, are selling. Reason 4: IBM's support for Java and the WebSphere foundation make a huge difference. Reason 5: Once IBM determines a 50/50 slice, Java versus legacy, IBM will drop legacy improvement efforts while continuing support, as done for the S/36 code base. Reason 6: With Java you may have the opportunity to switch platforms and run your code on multiple platforms without comparable work. Reason 7: Java has approached business logic from the opposite side native iSeries did, excelling at interfacing with users. This looks attractive, and the sell is easier. Where they meet in the middle is the battle we will live with over the next few years. Java will eventually win because IBM has already planned for this to occur. Reason 8: With legacy methods comes the legacy paradigm of thinking, high maintenance costs, and harder to believe return-on-investment. Reason 9: The synergy of many organizations will take the programming language to a much higher level of service. This is happening overnight. Reason 10: The same reason why we have cable TV instead of rabbit ears and have color instead of black and white: It's just a better way. --Mark
