Reader Feedback and Insights: Unix Is Not All Bad
Hey, Ted:
I've been racking my brain trying to use Unix Shell commands. Although CL is not perfect, I'll take it over Unix any day. Maybe someday IBM will provide us with CL commands that we true AS/400 programmers can use. As a matter of fact, the biggest thing I could use is the capability to create a subroutine within a CL to execute a repetitive task. Yes, I know that I can write another CL program, but overhead is a consideration.

In my response to Scott's letter, I touched on only one issue: whether Unix commands are easier to read and understand than CL commands. But there are several features of Qshell and the Unix shells that I much prefer to CL. Here are some that come to mind.
- I like the if/then/else structure better than CL's IF/ELSE.
- I like the while, until, for, and case structures.
- I like internal functions.
- I like the large number of predefined functions and variables.
I do not expect the good folks at IBM to enhance CL, Thomas. To my way of thinking, if they were going to add looping structures, subroutines, and so forth to the language, they would have done so long ago. If it's not cross-platform technology, like Java, Linux, and so forth, there appears to be no money in the budget for it.
