Reader Feedback and Insights: Why People Ask Basic Questions Hey, Ted: I don't think people are coming to or going out of any platform. The basic problem is that companies are forcing programmers to work on multiple platforms. Companies now do not care about what your skill is; you need to either satisfy business requirements or leave. They don't really care if you use Visual Basic or Java or RPG or Shell script. The result is "learning on demand." For example, I am now writing a Shell script on an AIX box. It sounds strange to Unix guys that a programmer would be asking basic questions about Shell scripting, but I am basically an AS/400 guy, and how am I supposed to know? I am not going to work continuously on Shell scripts, but only one time. I also have installed VB for a one-time requirement of connecting a vendor's secured site. I may ask some silly questions in the VB forums also. Overall, I am happy that whatever is developed in our company, they are only temporary or peripheral, and AS/400 remains a strong core platform where I have my best skills. --Arun Thanks for your insights, Arun. Keep in mind that I am only guessing why people ask such basic questions on the forums. I haven't taken any polls. --Ted
