Companies Want to Cut Down on OS Platform Sprawl
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
One of the major drivers of the server business these days is server consolidation. By this, vendors generally mean that companies have installed dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of individual servers to run distinct workloads, and now that servers are less expensive, they are consolidating some of these workloads onto bigger ones. Having fewer physical servers lowers the absolute cost of server administration for companies. But if research from Unisys is any indication, platform consolidation may be the next big thing. Novell's Messman Commits to Not Mess Up Open Source
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
"New York City in January is like an iceberg, and now I understand the choice of the Linux mascot," quipped Jack Messman, CEO and chairman of newly upstarted Linux player Novell in the opening keynote address at the LinuxWorld trade show in New York last week. In one short year, Novell has gone from being one of the biggest victims of the Linux and open source movements to what will turn out to be one of its biggest and most ardent champions. He laid out the case for open source and its inevitability in his address. READ MORE >

IBM to Pump Up Linux on Power Processors
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
It's been four years now since IBM caught the Linux bug (clearly a flu virus), and Irving Wladawsky-Berger, vice president of technology and strategy at Big Blue and one of the shakers behind the company's move into Linux, reminisced a bit at the LinuxWorld trade show in New York about how the growth rates for Linux shipments and revenues--not to mention some 6,300 enterprise Linux customers, including 200 governments--justified IBM's strategy. Now, IBM appears to want more. It wants Linux to drive sales of its Power-based machines, and it wants Power machines to drive Linux. READ MORE >

HP Says It Takes Away $75 Million in Unix Biz From Sun with Linux
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Hewlett-Packard did not have a lot of news at the LinuxWorld show in New York last week, but executives were on hand to brag about the $75 million in business it has stolen away from rival Sun Microsystems in the Unix business by selling former Sun customers Linux running on ProLiant and Integrity servers. While the amount of money is not a lot for these account wins, they can add up to a bigger piece of the IT budget at these new accounts for HP over time. READ MORE >

Java Tools Consortium: Just What We Needed?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
As the new year burst onto the scene, a group of software tools and middleware makers joined Sun Microsystems, the creator of the Java programming language, in establishing the Java Tools Community. There's been much noise about whether it has any real purpose or teeth, and whether it poses a threat to the IBM-backed Eclipse consortium or the Sun-backed NetBeans project, both of which are trying to deliver open-source integrated development environments for Java.
