Linux At the Tipping Point
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
As the old saying goes, be careful of what you ask for, because you might just get it. It is difficult to say for sure whether the open source development community behind Linux will ultimately be happy about this or not, but the evolving consensus among many of the major IT players and the companies that buy IT wares is that Linux is right now at the tipping point where it will go from being a contender to becoming a mainstream technology for computing. Intel Aims for Desktop with Prescott, But Hits Servers, Too
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
While most of the talk about the "Prescott" Pentium 4 processor that Intel launched this week was about how the new chip, which includes HyperThreading and a large L2 cache, can boost the performance of advanced desktop machines, the new Prescott chips are probably going to do a lot more for server customers than for desktop users until Intel ramps up the clock speed on them to the 4 GHz level or so. Is HP Inching Toward Opteron Machines?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Neither Hewlett-Packard nor Advanced Micro Devices will confirm or deny the story that is going around, but there is talk that HP is going to launch a server line, perhaps with the Integrity brand name on it, based on the 64-bit AMD Opteron processors. With HP being a co-developer, staunchest supporter, and biggest seller of the 64-bit Itanium processor from Intel in the server arena, such a move is significant--some might say stunning--if it proves to be true. Rumors Say IBM Will Merge Server, Technology Units
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
There are unconfirmed rumors running about that IBM is getting ready to merge its Enterprise Systems unit, which manufacturers and markets its servers and storage arrays, with its Technology Group, which develops processors and other electronics for IBM's own consumption, as well as for third parties. As I See It: The Unknown Face of Marketing
by Victor Rozek

The branch manager, whom I had never met, apparently wanted to include "the new guy" in the proceedings, so he asked me a question about the status of a pending sale. I answered, "I don't know; I'm not in sales." There was an audible groan from the room and I immediately understood this was not the right answer. READ MORE >
