Gates Stresses Trustworthy Computing, Names Security Chief
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Microsoft is not exactly known for the
rugged security of its software, and the company knows it has
a business problem as well as an image problem if customers do
not believe that the company's server and desktop operating
systems and the applications and middleware that run on top of
them are secure. Microsoft is finally doing something visible
about security, starting with Bill Gates and working down to
the most junior programmers at the company.

Government Starts Effort to Plug Open Source Security Holes
by Kristin Palitza
A U.S. government agency is backing an initiative called Sardonix
to increase Linux security auditing. The Defense Advanced
Research Project Agency (DARPA), which spawned many of the
technologies that went into creating the Internet, said it
aimed to engage the open source community in a
consortium-based approach to create a neutral and secure
operating system architecture framework. DARPA has sponsored
an audit portal to serve as a forum for open source code
reviewers from all over the world.

Microsoft Announces Much-Improved BizTalk Server 2002
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Microsoft last week announced the
general availability of its BizTalk Server 2002, the kicker to
its existing BizTalk Server 2000 XML-based middleware program.
The improved BizTalk Server 2002 middleware is better
integrated with other Microsoft system programs, and comes out
just as Microsoft is seeing some momentum build behind BizTalk
Server 2000. Microsoft says that with the help of its systems
integration partners, the company was able to sell BizTalk
Server to 800 customers in its first year of sales in 2001.

Linux Much Cheaper Than Unix, But Only for Certain Workloads
by Kristin Palitza
Linux on Intel-based servers is a viable alternative to RISC/Unix servers for certain workloads, due to its total cost of ownership (TCO) being significantly lower than for Unix servers, according to a new study just released by researcher International Data Corp. Those
findings, it warns, are true for particular workloads, but not
for all. IDC compared Internet/intranet/extranet and
collaborative workloads--two popular Linux workloads--on Linux
and RISC/Unix platforms for the TCO study; analysts stressed
the point that other workloads are likely to bring less
impressive TCO benefits.

HP and Compaq Pick A Date: March 19
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
The top brass at Hewlett Packard and Compaq have set a date for their
much-debated $25 billion merger agreement: March 19. HP
executives are in the middle of a proxy war with board member
Walter Hewlett, the son of one of HP's founders, who
originally gave his approval to the merger and then had second
thoughts. HP chairman and CEO Carly Fiorina has been energetic
and vocal in her support of the merger, which she believes
will make HP a stronger company.

CEO Claims LindowsOS No Longer Vaporware
by Kristin Palitza
Lindows.com has overcome the state of
being a pure idea and is now a product, claimed Lindows CEO
Michael Robertson when the company recently released a sneak
preview of its operating system. LindowsOS, an operating
system that runs both Windows and Linux programs that is based
on Linux and the open source WINE Windows emulator, is still
questionable, though, since the preview is a very raw model
that did not work for some programs according to early
reviewers.
