Windows Source Code Appears on the Web
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Microsoft, having succeeded in deflecting the MayDoom.C virus, which targeted its Web site with a denial-of-service attack two weeks ago, has now announced that a significant portion of the source code for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 has been posted on the Internet. While Microsoft discloses its source code to key partners and customers, having even a portion of the source code posted on the Web presents difficulties for the company. READ MORE >

Microsoft Fights Unix, Linux with Free SFU
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

If you can't beat 'em, emulate 'em--and give it away for free. This is Microsoft's very smart strategy in both dealing with the opportunity presented by the vast Unix server base and taking seriously the threat presented by the growing Linux base. Linux 2.6: Let's Take a Look Under the Hood
by Justin Ward

It's been a few weeks since the new Linux 2.6 kernel came out. Linux 2.6 was created explicitly to be faster, to support more systems and peripherals, and to be better than the Linux 2.4 kernel in most features. But what makes the 2.6 kernel tick, and tick so much better than the old one? A new scheduler, new filesystem code, and better multiprocessor support are just the starting points. The kernel has been expanded in all directions with this new release, offering better support for mainframes, midrange machines, desktops, and embedded systems alike. READ MORE >

OctigaBay Takes Opteron-Linux to New HPC Heights
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

A relatively new upstart is entering the fiercely competitive high performance computing (HPC) server market. OctigaBay Systems, a two-year-old startup founded by VCs and experts in HPC and telecoms systems, is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and its new OctigaBay 12K machine, which runs Linux and can scale to 12,000 64-bit Opteron processors in a cluster, presents an interesting challenge to IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Cray, Sun Microsystems, and SGI as they chase the HPC dollars. As I See It: Censoring the Self
by Victor Rozek

At a recent dinner party, I met a woman whose husband was a former CEO with a hospital management firm. Over cocktails, I asked her how he was adjusting to retirement. She didn't have to think long about her answer: "He's hurt and disappointed that the team of top management people he put together abandoned him after he left the company. One day everybody was friendly and solicitous; the next, it was almost as if he didn't exist." READ MORE >
