Fiorina Declares Victory in HP-Compaq Merger, Hewlett Says Count The Votes
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Can you say déjà vu? One party declares victory, and another says wait until the votes are all counted in a contest that is too close to call. No, this isn't the American presidential election of 2000, but the count among stockholders in Hewlett-Packard, which held its proxy vote for the $25 billion acquisition of rival Compaq . Compaq shareholders vote on the deal today, and it will probably be weeks before we know for sure if the merger has been accomplished.

HP Rejiggers Its Wintel/Lintel Server Line, Adds Xeon MPs
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Hewlett-Packard last week added new Wintel/Lintel servers using the "Foster" Xeon MP processors from Intel and added a few new models to replace existing NetServer line. HP executives positioned the announcements as a testament to HP's commitment to Intel-based servers--something that no one has really called into question. Merger or not, HP is just as committed to the Intel server platform as the other dominant players who are or will soon be all-Intel shops: Compaq and Dell.

IBM Debuts "Vigil" xSeries 440 Xeon MP Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
The marketing and engineering people at IBM have a vicious sense of humor, just like the same employees at any company. IBM's competitors were quick to make fun of the company's code-name for its two-way to eight-way xSeries servers using Intel's "Foster" Pentium 4 Xeon processors, now known as the Xeon MPs. They misunderstood. The vigil was not waiting for IBM's engineers to finish work on the "Summit" XA-32 chipset, which was done last year. The vigil was for Intel to get the Fosters out the door.

Unisys Adds Foster Xeon MPs To High-End ES7000 Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Unisys was an early and enthusiastic adopter of Intel's new "Foster" Pentium 4 Xeon processors, which are now called the Xeon MPs. Last week, the company announced that it had refreshed its 32-way ES7000 enterprise server line with the Foster processors, and it rebranded the machines the ES7000/200s to commemorate the occasion. Sources at Unisys say that the company has put over 600 ES7000 servers into the field since they started shipping in volume at the end of 2000.

Bynari Boosts Replacement Scheme for Microsoft Exchange
by Alex Woodie
More options are emerging for companies looking to avoid the cost of purchasing or maintaining Microsoft Exchange email servers. Last week, Bynari announced that it is giving away free copies of its bare-bones Linux-based email server. When coupled with Bynari's InsightConnector middleware, company executives say their email server software delivers the advanced collaboration features, such as group scheduling, found in Exchange, and enables a near plug-and-play replacement scheme for Exchange 5.5.

As I See It: Sam I Am
by Victor Rozek
The last time this happened, the search was conducted with military secrecy complete with code names. In what The Wall Street Journal called "the biggest corporate beauty contest ever," 125 candidates were considered. The chosen one was christened "Able," which turned out to be prescient if lacking in wit since the definitive name for the head cracker at Nabisco could be nothing other than "Baker."
