Bill Gates Talks Up Next 'Holy Grails' of Computing

Speech recognition software and visual application development techniques will be two of the next holy grails of technology to fall to human ingenuity, Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates said yesterday at the Gartner Symposium 2004 conference in San Diego, California. HP to Lead with Novell's SuSE Linux on Desktops, Servers

At Novell's annual BrainShare conference last week, the company announced an expanded partnership with Hewlett-Packard whereby HP will lead with Novell's newly acquired SuSE commercial Linux distribution, as much as possible, on everything from laptops to high-end servers. The caveat "as much as possible" is only limited to the speed at which languages and applications are supported in SuSE by Novell. READ MORE >

Linux Is Finally Prebundled on IBM eServers

SUNY Buffalo Builds 1.3 Teraflops Linux-Blade Super

In what will very likely become a growing trend, the State University of New York has deployed a new parallel supercomputer comprised entirely of clustered blade servers rather than clustered rack-mounted servers. The blade super will be installed at the SUNY Buffalo campus, which has a supercomputer center dedicated to science, visualization, and bioinformatics, and will be used to study the structure of proteins in the hope of treating diseases and discovering new drugs.
