President Belluzzo to Leave Microsoft; Headed Back Home to HP?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Rick Belluzzo, president and chief operating officer at
Microsoft, has lost
his job in the wake of a reshuffling at the company last
week. It was unclear if Belluzzo's resignation was the
result of a reshuffling, or if it in fact caused the
reshuffling to happen. Companies are rarely honest about
such things and always seek to put the best face on such
high-profile executive shifts and the changing of the
deck chairs that ensues.

IBM Defies Financial Gravity No Longer, xSeries Sales Down 20 Percent
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM this week
did something it hasn't done for more than a decade:
warned Wall Street that is was not going to make its
numbers. IBM has used a mix of financial engineering
tricks to buoy up its earnings in recent tough quarters,
but the temptation to play around with its numbers has
evaporated in the wake of the Enron collapse. So IBM's
chief financial officer, John Joyce, played it straight
and said that Big Blue's first quarter wasn't going to be
great.

Microsoft, Unisys Get Promotions Running on Windows
by Alex Woodie
Call it a case of bad karma. As part of Microsoft's crusade
to build support for its Windows operating system in the
enterprise, the software giant launched an anti-Unix Web
site with server partner Unisys last week, as
part of a campaign to portray Unix as a complex operating
system that unnecessarily ties users to expensive
hardware. Such a denigrating tactic would hardly garner
much ink on a normal news day, except for the revelation
of the embarrassing fact that the anti-Unix Web site
itself was actually running on Unix software. The plot
grew thicker, when, after much negative publicity, the
anti-Unix Web site was moved to a Windows 2000 server
running Internet Information Server and promptly quit
working.

by Alex Woodie
SafeStone

Kingdom that had specialized in OS/400 security with its
flagship DetectIT offering, is building a new suite of

called AxessIT, will consist of 11 modules that provide
systems administrators with secure methods for
controlling users' access to applications and data. The
first module, called AxessIT Web, has been generally
available since October, while the second, AxessIT
Resource Manager, is scheduled to enter beta tests next
month.
