Judge Throws Out Hewlett Case, So HP Eats Compaq

The Delaware Chancery court judge hearing the suit brought by Walter Hewlett against the upper management of Hewlett-Packard threw the case out of court last week, humiliating Hewlett and leaving the path open for HP to proceed with its $19 billion acquisition of rival Compaq, which ceased to exist as a separate company just as we went to press. The new company is known as Hewlett-Packard and trades under the stock symbol HPQ, an amalgam of HWP and CPQ, the two companies' prior symbols on the New York Stock Exchange.

Navision Confirms and Endorses $1.3 Billion Microsoft Buyout

The board of directors of Navision, the Danish application software vendor that has one of the most popular software suites in Europe and one of the largest installed bases in the world, has confirmed that it has indeed been entertaining a takeover offer from Microsoft. Not only that, the board says that it approves of the $1.3 billion offer, and is asking shareholders to go enthusiastically along with it. Microsoft is offering either cash or Microsoft shares of equal value to Navision shareholders.

Red Hat to Deliver Linux 7.3 Release on May 15

Only a few weeks after launching the enterprise edition of its Linux 7.2 software, Red Hat will next week rolled out a revamped Linux 7.3 edition for workstations and servers. The Red Hat 7.3 release, which is based on the Linux 2.4.18 kernel, is aimed at workstation and print, file, and Web server users. The new release has improvements in the graphical user interface, firewall, and Web serving features, and also includes video conferencing software and extended support for students and educators who are influential in the uptake of Linux.

IDC Says Linux Has Hurdles to Jump to Appease VARs

Linux might be the wave of the future for many commercial IT workloads. But for now, the open source operating system has some maturing to do, especially when it comes to how vendors and Linux distributors push Linux solutions through the sales channel. That's the word coming out of Framingham, Massachusetts, where analysts at International Data Corp this week issued a new report about the uptake of Linux in the value-added reseller (VAR) community called "Linux: A Supplier's Guide to Reseller Views."

Inventive Designers to Introduce X-Platform Document-Processing Tool

Companies possessing documents on various platforms supporting the Java 2.3.1 environment--which includes Windows 2000, Linux, Unix, OS/400, and Mac OS--will soon be able to consolidate and standardize their workflow within one architectural infrastructure. In June, Inventive Designers will start shipping Scriptura, a platform-independent document-processing tool designed to produce customized documents and reports that can be printed by any network printer, Web enabled, or output to PDF format for e-mail distribution.
