Intel Says Some 'McKinley' Itanium 2 Chips Have Bugs

If you have a server or workstation using the 900 MHz or 1 GHz "McKinley" Itanium 2 processor from Intel, pay attention. According to an errata report that Intel is just about to post to its support site, there is an electrical issue with the McKinley processors that, under very specific circumstances, can cause machines to crash. The exact nature of the problem and the conditions under which it manifests are not clear. READ MORE >

ITAA Says Demand for IT Workers at Historic Lows

According to a recent survey by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), unless there is a dramatic recovery in the US economy within the next year, a return to normal levels of hiring and compensation among IT workers in America is not likely to happen. This will make it tougher for anyone looking for new work as a manager or a programmer, but companies will probably have a large pool of candidates to choose from because of the downturn in hiring. PeopleSoft to Port Its Applications to Linux

PeopleSoft said last week that it will port its 170 software modules to Linux, which, the company believes, will give it a competitive advantage in the tough market for selling application software. Right now the ERP software maker is only working on ports to Linux versions that run on Intel processors, but it may eventually see the wisdom in extending its application support to running Linux on alternative architectures, such as Advanced Micro Devices' Opteron and IBM's Power RISC processors. IBM Ships 3582 LTO Tape Library and Upgrades 3583 Library

Companies looking to upgrade their tape drives may want to check out the latest LTO 2 tape libraries that IBM announced last week. Big Blue's new entry-level 3582 tape library uses the latest LTO Ultrium 2 tape drives, while an updated version of the midrange 3583 library allows users to intermix LTO 1 with LTO 2 drives and tapes. J.D. Edwards fleshed out its new suite of ERP software recently with the introduction of a business modeling tool for manufacturers and distributors.
